Introducing Hello Beautiful

January 14, 2015

In early November 2014, the cool kids around South Africa would’ve been bopping to the electronic surrealist sounds of Hello Beautiful when he dropped his debut album.

The self-titled album featured a track called Universe, a spacious instrumental exploring the galaxy and universe at large.

The video, created and directed by David East and Robert Wisniewski, was shot in various roads along Cape Town and also at White Wall Studios. The video stars Gabi Roumega and can be described as a visual art piece as opposed to a narrative piece, with descriptive imagery which fits the mood of the song.

The DJ/producer at the same said: “I think the concept behind the music video plays a lot with adventure and exploring the feeling of journey. Almost like someone finding peace in their solitude. We wanted to just show pieces of expression though a character and different feelings that one would go through. As the song is quite a cinematic piece, we decided to take that direction.”

We finally got a hold of him and asked him to elaborate on his debut and some of his musical influences. Here’s what he had to say:

What are your biggest music influences?

I would say M83, St. Lucia, Air. There are just to many to name.

How do you approach the making of a song?

It all depends, sometime I write a song in one hour, sometimes it takes me days, I often go back to old ideas and rework them into a track. It also depends on how I’m feeling at the time.

Who is Hello Beautiful in one sentence?

A Cape Town based producer/musician.

How would you describe the kind of music you make?

Indie/electronic, it’s quite easy listening I would say.

How long have you worked on your debut album?

Roughly 6-8 months.

What was the general feeling you wanted to convey?

I always just wanted to make music to a movie i watch, like sci-fi movies, I just wane score a sci-fi movie soundtrack one day. I would definitely say a happy feeling.

How does the album translate onto a live stage?

At this point its just me alone behind a DJ booth, I play live synth through out the whole set, also have a sample pad I use in the set, I use Ableton. I’ll be launching a three piece band with my next album in 2015.

Describe your first gig as Hello Beautiful?

It was at Untamed Youth (your weekly disco/indie/electro party at Fiction) it’s run by two of the greatest humans I know, Tommy Gun and Wayde Herman. It was great, strange to be alone up there as I always play in bands, but I got use to it fast.

What has been the most challenging thing about being a musician in Cape Town?

Hmm..if you have a car it’s a huge mission haha.

Who are some local musicians that you’d love to work with and collaborate with?
I’d say Peach from ‘Yesterday’s Pupil’, James from ‘Holiday Murry’ and and Matthew from ‘Beatenburg’, there are more but I’ll save them for next time.
