India: Principal Delivers Cooked Meals to Elderly
In the midst of a nationwide lockdown against the coronavirus, a college professor from southern India is doing his part to distribute food to the elderly.
Dr Sasi Kanta Dash – who heads the Tagore Government Arts and Science College in Pondicherry – recently completed forty days of delivering hot food to senior citizens confined to their homes.
Starting with delivering prescription medicines to self-quarantining seniors, Dr Dash then began distributing packets of essential cooking supplies to families in need.
Now, with the aid of local organisations – as well as the kitchen at the college – he and his team of volunteers have been able to provide over 100 000 cooked meals to hundreds of people
Dr Dash said: “It had been my dream to give back to society and the nation … I took the initiative of channelising the positive energy of the local people and started with feeding 250 people on day one.”
He added: “We didn’t know the extent of the lockdown when it was announced for the first time on March 24th. But the immense satisfaction at the end of the first day catalysed the actions for the future.”
