India: Monsoon Floods Devastate Gujarat
Indian officials have said that monsoon floods in Gujarat have left four people dead and six others missing over the weekend.
Officials said that the number of those reported as missing may increase as rescue operations in the region continue.
India’s National Disaster Response Force has been working around the clock with the country’s military to rescue those affected by the floods.
They said that they have rescued more than 2000 people thus far, and have moved them to higher ground.
According to officials, over 120 villages in the region have been severely affected by the floods.
Power to these villages has been cut off and several highways to and from these villages have been completely flooded.
Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, two states in northeastern India, have suffered landslides due to the ongoing torrential rain over the past week.
Officials said that over 500 000 people in Assam have been affected by the floods, and that at least 12 people have died.
India’s Meteorological Department said that locals should brace themselves for further heavy rain over the next two to three days.
