Ian Wright on Receiving End of Online Racist Attacks
Former Arsenal and England striker, Ian Wright, revealed that he was subjected to racist abuse and death threats by a so-called fan.
Taking to Twitter on Monday, 11 May, the 56-year-old shared screenshots of derogatory messages that he recently received from a young Instagram user, who has been identified as Patrick O’Brien.
One of O’Brien’s messages reads: “You’re like 65 years old [sic]. If I get corona [sic] I will cough in your face and give you your death sentence.”
In the tweet’s caption, Wright lamented: “I know I’m not meant to look at them but these messages still hit me so hard, man. This is a child!!! [sic] … This kid has a direct line into me & [sic] is able to send this without any worry.”
Kick It Out – an anti-racial soccer organisation – strongly condemned the “disgraceful abuse” in a statement.
They wrote: “Whilst we continue to collaborate with social media platforms to ensure a safer user experience for all, these cases should be investigated by law enforcement and the abusers should face criminal sanctions.”
