Hurricane Dorian Eyes Florida After Cruising by Carribean
Hurricane Dorian moved past Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Wednesday night, 28 August, and did surprisingly little damage, but now the storm is on its way to Florida’s east coast.
The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) had previously predicted the tropical storm would gather strength and upgrade into a category 1 hurricane whilst passing over Puerto Rico.
Reports say that little to no damage was done aside from one community experiencing a blackout.
New predictions suggest that the storm will continue growing over the weekend, and will eventually be classed as a category 3 hurricane.
It is forecasted that Dorian will pass near the Bahamas on Saturday, 31 August, and then meet Florida by the following afternoon.
Local authorities in Florida have already started making preparations – such as distributing sandbags, requesting federal assistance and urging residents to stock up on food, water and emergency supplies – for Dorian’s arrival.
