Holy Smokes! Happy 80th Anniversary, Batman

September 23, 2019

On Saturday, 21 September, a familiar bat-shaped signal lit up the sky above many cities around the world, marking the 80th anniversary of everyone’s favourite “Caped Crusader”, Batman.

From Berlin to Tokyo, the Bat Signal graced notable buildings at 8PM local time in each location, to the delight of fans who heeded the call to action and gathered to share in the fun.

Some locations had additional festivities planned, such as a signing and panel session with “Batman” writers in New York, while Los Angeles hosted a five-kilometre night-run in his name.

The day celebrates the comic book character’s first appearance in “Detective Comics”’ 27th issue, which was released in May 1939. It is observed every third Saturday of September to honour the “Dark Knight”, who was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger.

Since then, Batman has enjoyed countless incarnations in comic books, Hollywood films, television shows and other forms of media. He continues to grow as one of the world’s most recognisable and favourite fictional heroes.
