Highlanders Give Erol Akbay 2-Year Contract

February 02, 2016

Premier League football team, the Highlanders, have announced that they have given Erol Akbay a two-year contract to be the new coach of the Bulawayo-based team.

Akbay, who hails from the Netherlands, has not met with his new team yet as he is still in Holland waiting for his permit papers to be cleared by home affairs.

The Highlanders also announced that he will be assisted by previous head coach, Amin Soma Phiri, who at least helped the Highlanders survive relegation in what was otherwise a rather poor season for the Bulawayo giants.

Peter Dube, chairman of the Highlanders, said that Akbay’s contract is a performance-based contract that will be valid for two years:

“…Erol Akbay’s contract is two years. It is a performance-based contract and he will be assessed in the first year,” he said to a general meeting of the club’s board members on Saturday.

He also crushed rumours that Soma Phiri would not be returning to the coaching staff of the Highlanders:

“…Having achieved a marvellous turnaround for the team last year, there were reports in the media that Amini Soma-Phiri was reluctant to serve the team. The truth of the matter is he will be assistant coach to the head coach. The club expects him to use his astuteness to build a formidable team to challenge for honours,” he said.

Joining them on the coaching staff is Cosmas Zulu, who will be the goalkeeper’s coach, as well as Vezigama Dlodlo who will take the role of welfare manager.
