Helicopter Crash Kills 5 Officials in Sudan

December 10, 2018

A state governor and four other officials have been confirmed dead after a helicopter crashed on Sunday, 9 December, in eastern Sudan.

According to witnesses, the helicopter was attempting to land in a field in the remote state of Al-Qadarif. It then exploded into flames after hitting a communications tower.

Among the confirmed casualties are Al-Qadarif governor Mirghani Saleh, as well as his cabinet chief, the local minister of agriculture, the local police chief and the head of border guards.

It is unknown at this time what caused the crash or if there were any survivors.

Sudan’s military and civilian fleet includes many aged Soviet-made aircraft.

The accident comes two months after eight people were injured in a collision between two Sudanese army planes on the runway at Khartoum airport.
