“Heads Down, Boxes on, Students”
A school in southern India has issued an official apology after photos emerged of students with cardboard boxes on their heads whilst writing exams to prevent cheating.
The Bhagat Pre-University College in the small town of Haveri, in the state of Karnataka, tried the new method last Wednesday, 16 October, according to Mr M.B. Sateesh, who is one of the directors of the institution.
The experimental measure was photographed by a staff member. The photos show neat rows of students wearing boxes with the front cut out, which limits their vision but allows them to focus on their exam sheets – similar to blinkers on a horse.
The images were posted on Facebook and subsequently went viral – it did not take long before the school was receiving major scrutiny on social media.
Even the state education minister, S. Suresh Kumar, weighed in with a tweet: “Nobody has any right to treat anybody more so students like animals. This (perversion) will be dealt with aptly. [sic]”
Last year, the school faced a serious cheating problem, which prompted such new measures.
