January 04, 2016

The Harare City Council has announced that they are planning to demolish a series of old hostels in the Mbare suburb that has been dilapidated for quite some time.

According to the council, the demolishing will take place in order to make way for new, modern housing in the form of housing units.

It is believed that the council will build up to 10 000 housing units in the area that as previously occupied by the hostels.

Mbare councillor, Martin Matinyanya, said in a statement that the demolition and reconstruction of the housing units was meant to decongest and bring sanity to the suburb.

“…[sic] It’s indeed a good project. The flats need to be upgraded and people will have a decent life. Currently, the hostels are in a bad state, not conducive for people to stay in. In some cases, you find seven or eight people sleeping in one room,” he said.

He continued saying that new housing units will be constructed on vacabt spaces as well as the new spaces to be provided by the demolition:

“…[sic] The new flats would be developed on vacant spaces between exisiting hostels and residents would be moved into new flats then the old ones may either be demolished or refurbished depending with the engineering and architectural reports,” Matinyanya said.
