Harare City Council Fires 3000 Workers

August 19, 2015

The Harare City Council has announced that it is laying off close to 3000 workers .

The council said that they decided to lay off the workers because of funding problems and that they are aiming at reducing their labour so that they can meet service demands:

“We are reducing our labour so that we can meet our obligations in terms of service delivery against service delivery…[sic[ We have a target of 70:30 in terms of our revenue with more resources being channeled towards service provision and less on human resources or salaries,” the council said.

The layoffs also come at a time when the new legislation was passed that supports them in their decision. The council used the recent Supreme Court ruling which allowed the dismissal of employees on three months’ notice.
The dismissals come at a time the legislature is in the process of amending the Labour Act.
