Guardiola: Don’t Ask Me, Ask the Referees

November 11, 2019

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, appeared stoic in a post-match interview, but held firmly to his side’s strategy during their 3-1 loss to Liverpool on Sunday, 10 November.

The Anfield team flexed their muscles and scored three goals within 52 minutes, while the visitors netted a lone goal in the 78th minute of the game.

The match turned controversial when the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled against a penalty after the ball allegedly struck the arm of Liverpool player, Trent Alexander-Arnold, in the 8th minute. It was the first penalty denied to Manchester City.

Emotions flared in the 82nd minute when a visibly frustrated Guardiola thrust two fingers in the air to indicate what he felt was the second penalty denial.

After the game, the Citizens’ boss was seen thanking match referee, Michael Oliver, and the rest of his assistants in an overly expressive – allegedly sarcastic – manner.

When asked about the VAR review, Guardiola said: “We never know what happens in the future. But on the decisions, ask the [referees].”

Liverpool are sitting comfortably in the top spot of the table with 34 points, eight above the 26 of both Leicester City and Chelsea in second place, and nine points ahead of Manchester City’s 25 in third.
