Grenfell Tower: Investigation will Take 4 Months

July 12, 2017

The lead police officer in the Grenfell Tower Fire victim identification has said that the investigation will take up to four months.

Police Sergeant, Alistair Hutchins, told reporters that his team is working around the clock to sift through the tonnes of debris to find the remains of the victims.

Hutchins asked the families of victims to be patient and assured them that he and his team are doing everything they can to identify the remains that they find as accurately and efficiently as possible.

It is believed that more than 80 people died in the fire that ravaged the apartment building on 14 June. However, only 21 victims have been identified thus far.

Hutchins’ team consists of 12 officers, who specialise in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI), 24 search-trained officers and six archeologists.

Hutchins said that his team are being as meticulous as possible, and are using 6 mm sieves to help identify victims.

“All I say is please be patient. We are doing our utmost best for you and we are working as hard as we can…My teams can’t work any harder, but we are trying our very best to get your loved ones back [sic]” he said.

A vigil for the victims is being planned for 14 July, one month since the devastating fire.
