Grainger, Soncin Preview Norway-Italy Quarter-Final Showdown

July 15, 2025

The quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 tournament are upon us, and one of these bouts will see Norway taking on Italy tomorrow, Wednesday 16 July.

Having secured second place in Group B with four points, Italy will face Norway – the Group A winners with nine points – at the Stade de Genève in Geneva, Switzerland.

In an interview with UEFA (published on Tuesday, 15 July), Norway coach Gemma Grainger commended their opponents’ defensive strategy in particular.

“They’re a team who are obviously very close to us in the rankings,” said Grainger. “They have some very good individual players. From a defensive perspective, they’re very well-organised, … [with] a strong back five.”

Italy coach Andrea Soncin acknowledged the strength of the Norwegians, but declared that her team would meet the challenge head-on.

“[The girls] know exactly how hard they fought in the past to earn their place, and how much we had to battle even to reach this small milestone,” remarked Soncin. “We’ll approach the next match the same way, because we want to keep chasing our dream.

“We know Norway well, and we believe we can keep moving forward by making the most of the resources we have – while also enjoying the moment.”
