Government To Start Feeding Hungry School Kids

March 15, 2016

The government has announced plans to feed hungry school children across the country after the severe drought crisis has forced several school children to go hungry because of food scarcities.

According to various reports by state-owned newspapers, the government has approved a budget of US$200 million National School Feeding Scheme, which will be implemented as of May this year.

The scheme will ensure that school children in the worst hit drought areas of the country will receive at least one meal a day from the school. The government also said that children who are within the first two years of school will be given priority.

“…The schools feeding programme will commence in May and it will be for the infants from Grade 0 to 2,” Prisca Mupfumira, Public Service Minister said.

While the government has set aside a seemingly massive budget for the National School Feeding Scheme, provision of certain foods may fall on the responsibility of the actual schools.

Schools will also be encouraged to start their own vegetable gardens.

The news comes just after it was reported that more than 2000 school children in some of the worst hit drought areas in the country were dropping out of school because of hunger.

Zimbabawe has been enveloped in a drought crisis for the past 5 months after the El Nino weather phenomenon wrecked havoc on Southern African countries.
