Glenn Hoddle Takes Swipe at Tuchel Over England Squad Choice

May 29, 2026

Glenn Hoddle has strongly lambasted Thomas Tuchel after Crystal Palace star player Adam Wharton was omitted from England’s World Cup squad.

The 22-year-old ace midfielder was overlooked in favor of 35-year-old Brentford veteran Jordan Henderson, a selection that sparked intense media debate.

Tuchel’s snub came just before Wharton delivered a man-of-the-match performance in Leipzig, Germany, driving Palace to a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano to capture the UEFA Conference League title. The win secured the South London club’s first European trophy and a spot in next season’s Europa League.

Hoddle spoke to a local sports publication on Thursday, 28 May, sharing his surprise at the talented midfielder’s exclusion: “I’m not sure England have got many in the deep-lying positions who can do that on a consistent level. So I raised an eyebrow when I saw he wasn’t in the squad.”

Wharton took the decision professionally: “I’m not going to sit here and cry about it … Hopefully, there are other tournaments and World Cups I can go to in the future.”

Despite the international setback and the domestic transition following manager Oliver Glasner’s departure, the four-cap international remains focused on anchoring Palace’s upcoming continental campaign.
