Ghanaian University Shut Down Following Student Protests
A university in southern Ghana has been closed indefinitely following violent protests carried out by students on Monday.
According to media reports, students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) – located in the city of Kumasi – mounted roadblocks, vandalised university and private property, and boycotted lectures.
They accused the university’s security and management of brutality, after 11 students were arrested and reportedly beaten by campus-based security last Friday.
The reason behind these students’ arrest was because they had taken part in their customary end-of-week party, known as a jamboree, which the university authorities had recently banned on the belief that it promoted “misbehaviour” on campus.
As a result of the shutdown, all students were asked to evacuate the campus on Tuesday, with the exception of foreign students who the university said it will provide security for.
A statement released by the Ministry of Education Ministry said that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh will commence a government delegation to KNUST.
