Ghana: Lecturers Suspended over Sexual Misconduct Claims

February 19, 2020

Two lecturers at the University of Ghana have been suspended for allegedly sexually harassing female students.

In a 2019 documentary titled “Sex for grades: Undercover in West Africa Universities”, undercover female journalists attended the Accra-based institution as well as the University of Lagos.

The documentary proceeds to show Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr Paul Butakor allegedly making inappropriate advances on the journalists, promising them passing grades if they complied.

In the aftermath of the documentary, the University of Ghana effectively suspended Professor Gyampo for six months without pay; Dr Butakor received a four-month suspension without pay.

On Monday, 17 February, the university also ruled that the two lecturers – who deny the allegations – breached the institution’s code of conduct rules. As a result, they must undergo training about the university’s sexual harassment and misconduct policy.

If Professor Gyampo and Dr Butakor receive a positive assessment, they will be allowed to resume their duties. They must also undergo annual assessments for the next five years.
