Ghana: Increased Virus Detection with Novel Method

May 06, 2020

As medical personnel across the world grapple with a short supply of coronavirus (COVID-19) test kits, Ghana has engaged a unique method to cope with testing its population.

The Ghanian health ministry is making use of “pool testing” of samples, which involves using a single test on 10 samples combined. Once a positive result is detected, individual testing of the entire batch commences until the infected specimen is discovered.

Experts consider the approach an inexpensive time-saver, provided the west African nation’s COVID-19 infection rates remain low. However, the validity of the tests has been questioned.

Local authorities have gathered over 100 000 samples so far.

The country has also achieved a world-first by delivering test samples directly to laboratories via medical drones. The unique delivery system limits contact between people, and allows for swift identification and isolation of infected individuals.

There are currently 2 719 active cases in Ghana, with 18 casualties. So far, 294 people have recovered from the contagion.
