Ghana Floods: At Least 10 Dead
Ghana’s national disaster agency has said that at least 10 people have died in flash floods in the country.
Ghana has been experiencing intense torrential rains the past week, which has wrecked havoc on villages and have caused injuries and death.
Four continuous days of rain caused floods in the country’s capital of Accra, as well as other areas in Ghana’s central region.
The agency said that there is believed to be between 10 and 12 people dead, with at least 8 of them being children.
“…In all we have 10 to 12 who lost their lives during this rainy season…We have two women and an eight-year-old girl who were walking and a wall fell on them and they died,” a spokesperson for the agency said.
He also said that there were reports of a boy who had been electrocuted:
“…There is also a report of a nine-year-old boy who was electrocuted at Amamoma,” he said.
The latest tragedy involving floods comes merely a year after an estimated 150 were killed in 2015 in Accra, following an explosion at a petrol station where hundreds were seeking shelter from the torrential rain.
Locals are also starting to become annoyed with the government, who they say have promised to make provision for heavy rains and preventing deaths and injuries because of flooding.
A local resident said that their properties had been completely destroyed:
“…Every day they say they will solve this (flood) problem. But nothing changes. See all my properties have been destroyed,” the resident said.
