George Floyd: A Sombre Farewell

June 10, 2020

Slain African American citizen, George Floyd, has been laid to rest in a funeral held in his hometown of Houston, Texas.

On 25 May, the 46-year-old restaurant worker died in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after he was pinned to the ground by three police officers, while a fourth officer named Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over eight minutes.

Floyd’s death sparked global protests against police brutality and racism, with the four officers facing charges for taking his life.

On Tuesday, 9 June, 500 guests comprising friends, family, activists and celebrities gathered at the Fountain of Praise Church to bid their final goodbyes to Floyd, whose body lay in a gold casket.

Reverend Al Sharpton, who delivered the eulogy, powerfully addressed the mourners: “We are fighting wickedness in high places! … Until we know the price for black life is the same as the price for white life, we’re going to keep coming back to these situations over and over again.”

Floyd was buried next to his mother’s grave at Houston Memorial Gardens cemetery.
