Former Fugees Producer John Forte Found Dead
The music world is mourning John Forte, the Grammy-nominated producer and rapper, who was discovered dead in his Massachusetts home on Monday, 12 January.
Local police confirmed there were no signs of foul play, though a specific cause of death remains under investigation.
Forte was a vital collaborator within the Refugee Camp All-Stars, contributing to the Fugees’ landmark 1996 hip-hop album “The Score”. A 14-year prison sentence for drug trafficking later marked his career, which George W. Bush commuted after seven years following an extensive campaign by singer Carly Simon.
Forte credited Simon’s impact on his life, saying: “She’s my champion, my crusader, my mentor, my friend, my spiritual guru.”
Following his release, he continued to release music and work on film scores. His death has prompted heartfelt tributes from colleagues.
Wyclef Jean shared a video of the two performing on Instagram with the caption: “This one hurts my brother [John forte] has joined the Angels legends never Die look at the smile R I P my Refugee brother. [sic]”
Highlighting the artist’s creative legacy and character, comedian Amy Schumer also mentioned via Instagram that Forte was “prolific and beautiful.”
