Florida Nurses Turn Surgical Wrap into Sleeping Bags
A group of nurses at a hospital in Tampa, Florida, are putting their stitching skills to good use in order to help the homeless.
These nurses – who all work together at Tampa General Hospital – are recycling sterile surgical wrap to create waterproof sleeping bags that will keep homeless people warm on cold nights.
Surgical wrap is normally used to protect operating room instruments, before the wrap are discarded.
Nicole Hubbard, a nurse anaesthetist, explained how she came up with the concept: “I see all these sterile wrappers that we just throw away, so I thought, ‘What a cool recycling initiative to help the homeless.’”
With the help of colleagues Lucy and Claudia, these ladies created a practical sewing pattern for the sleeping bags – some of which are large enough to be “rolled down for comfort, rolled up to cover [the shoulders].”
Other hospital employees have helped Hubbard’s group to sew 100 sleeping bags so far, which will be distributed among Tampa’s homeless population.
