Floods in Zim Cause Increase in Malaria Cases

imbabwean health authorities have said that there has been a sharp increase in Malaria cases in the country, following the severe floods of the past few months.

According to the Ministry of Health, 89 261 Malaria cases were reported in the last two months alone.

Of these reported cases, the ministry said that there had been 151 fatalities in the past two months.

In order to prevent further deaths, the Ministry of Health said that they are ‘stepping up efforts’ to distribute anti-malarial drugs in various regions across the country.

“We are going to increase treatment services as well as prevention drugs especially to those areas that are highly prone to malaria and also respray those areas,” Health Minister David Parirenyatwa told local newspapers.

The torrential rains has caused several problems for Zimbabwe over the past few months, most of them relating to flooding and the spread of disease.

According to various sources, more than 2000 people have been displaced because of the rains and subsequent flooding, and approximately 246 people have died in recent months.

However, Malaria isn’t the only disease affecting Zimbabweans recently.

The Ministry of Health also announced on Friday that health officials and aid workers across the country are being trained in ‘emergency responses’ to other diseases like Cholera and Typhoid disease.

Some cases of these diseases have already been recorded in certain areas of the country, including in Chiredzi and Chipinge.
