FIFA Launches Argentina World Cup Investigation
FIFA has launched formal disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following multiple controversies during the 2026 World Cup.
The investigation centres on two major flashpoints. First, players brandished a political banner proclaiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands after defeating England 2–1 in the semi-finals. Addressing the incident, a spokesperson for then United Kingdom prime minister Keir Starmer said: “The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are.”
Second, confrontations erupted after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain in the final. Midfielder Leandro Paredes faces three counts of assault, whilst Nahuel Molina faces charges for assault and unsporting behaviour. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala, substitute Thiago Almada, and Spanish player Gavi also face action.
Furthermore, the Argentinian Football Association faces broader charges covering team misconduct, discriminatory chants, late kick-offs, and security breaches.
Confirming the process, FIFA stated: “In accordance with the Fifa Disciplinary Code, the respondents have now been provided with the opportunity to present their position, following which a decision will be issued by the Fifa Disciplinary Committee in due course.”
