Female Suicide Bombers Shot in Nigeria
Three female suicide bombers targeted a popular market in northeastern Nigeria yesterday but were gunned down by civilian self-defense fighters. Yusuf Muhammad Gulak, Madagali council chairman stated that the fighters challenged the suicide bombers who then began running towards the fighters.
Fighters shot down the first bombers whose explosives then detonated upon impact of the gunshot, killing her and one of her companions. According to Gulak, the final bomber was shot as she turned to flee the scene.
Civilian and military officials have placed the blame on Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram, which has killed more than 20 000 people during its seven year uprising. The group is also known for using women and girls as young as seven in suicide bombings, which has led to the suspicion that some of these females may have been kidnapped.
Only last month, two female suicide bombers attacked Madagali market, killing 57 people and injuring 177, of which 120 were children. This was only 20km from the market that was attacked yesterday.
