Fearless Flat-Earther’s Plans Fall Flat

February 25, 2020

Michael Hughes, an American daredevil and flat Earth believer, has died at the age of 64.

“Mad” Mike Hughes was filming a stunt on Saturday, 22 February, for the Science Channel series, “Homemade Astronauts”, when his rocket’s landing parachute malfunctioned and he crashed.

The stunt took place near Barstow, California, and the objective was to launch Hughes’ self-made rocket approximately over 1.5 kilometres into the air.

The Californian native earned the “Mad” moniker for his bravery; however, it was given far before his blunt denial that the Earth was spherical in shape – joining a vast group of people who believe the planet is flat.

Hughes previously made headlines last August when he attempted to launch another home-made rocket to confirm the Earth was flat; before that, he had attempted another launch in November 2017, but was shut down by local authorities as he did not have the required permit.

He also played a large part in the 2019 documentary, “Rocketman: Mad Mike’s Mission to Prove the Flat-Earth.”

In a trailer for “Homemade Astronauts”, Hughes said: “People ask me why I do stuff like this. Basically, it’s just to convince people they can do extraordinary things with their lives.”
