Ex-Trump Campaign Boss Sentenced to 47 Months
The former campaign manager of US President Donald Trump has been sentenced to under four years in prison, after he was found guilty of tax and bank fraud related to his work advising Ukrainian politicians.
According to reports, Paul Manafort was convicted last year after he was accused of hiding millions of dollars in federal taxes from the US government, money that he had earned while working as a consultant for Ukraine’s former pro-Russia government.
In addition, prosecutors claimed that Manafort defrauded banks to secure loans and maintain his lavish lifestyle.
Appearing in a federal court yesterday in Alexandria, Virginia, Manafort – sitting in a wheelchair as a result of gout – was charged by Judge T.S. Ellis III for his actions. He was sentenced to 47 months in prison, much less than the recommended sentence of between 19 and 24 years.
The 69-year-old lobbyist must also pay $24.8 million in restitution and a $50 000 fine.
