European Heatwave Sweeps Across Regions
To say Europe is a little hot under the collar is an understatement: France is ready to experience what could be considered its hottest day on record, whilst Spain is combating some of the worst wildfires in decades.
France has raised its danger alert to its highest level as it prepares to see a 45 centigrade today, Friday 28 June – the current record is 44.1 Celsius, which occurred in August 2003.
Areas of Spain, Italy and Switzerland have also raised their alert levels after record temperatures pushed the mercury to sweltering highs.
Unconfirmed reports claim that several people have been killed in the blazes currently raging through Spain, including two people who have died from suspected heatstroke.
Meanwhile, firefighters have been battling a large fire in the northeastern region of Catalonia in Spain, one that has destroyed over 5 500 hectares and forced 53 locals to flee.
Scientists across Europe have predicted that the current hot spell could continue into next week.
