EPL and EFL to Resume Ramadan Match Pauses

February 17, 2026

English football will continue to support Muslim players this season by allowing brief match breaks during Ramadan.

From Tuesday, 17 February, to 18 March, English Premier League and English Football League officials and captains will coordinate natural stoppages in play to allow athletes to break their fast.

These pauses are specifically designed for matches where sunset occurs during play, such as this weekend’s fixtures involving West Ham, Bournemouth, Tottenham, and Arsenal. Referees will identify a convenient moment, like a goal-kick or throw-in, for players to consume liquids or energy gels.

The initiative, which began in 2021 during a Leicester City versus Crystal Palace fixture, has been praised by players for its inclusivity. Beyond mid-game breaks, clubs have adapted by providing halal catering and adjusting training schedules to assist with the physical demands of fasting.

Former Everton player Abdoulaye Doucoure highlighted the importance of this accommodation, stating: “My religion is the most important thing in my life – I put my religion first, then comes my work.”

He added, “In the Premier League, you are free to do whatever suits you. They will never do anything against your faith and this is great.”
