England Win U-20 World Cup
England’s U-20 national team have done their country proud by winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea on Sunday.
England managed to edge out Venezuela 1-0 at the Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon.
It was a big moment for the young team, who brought England their biggest international title since the World Cup in 1966.
English 20-year-old, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, scored the first (and only) goal in the 35th minute of the game.
Venezuela came close to breaking even when striker, Adalberto Penaranda, was awarded a penalty after he was fouled by England’s Kyle Walker-Peters in the second half.
However, English goalkeeper, Freddie Woodman, managed to save the goal, ultimately giving England the win.
“Thankfully Freddie saved the penalty. I was watching through my fingers from the halfway line and it was an incredible moment. It was a big, big moment that helped turn the game,” Calvert-Lewin said after the match.
Woodman was awarded the Golden Glove award – an award given to the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
The U-20 team received overwhelming praise from fellow football professionals, including first-time senior English captain, Harry Kane, who tweeted:
“Congratulations @England u20’s! Amazing achievement to be world champions! [sic].”.
Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and former English international, Alan Shearer, also congratulated the young team on their win.
England’s senior national team didn’t have the same luck as the youngsters and drew against Scotland on Saturday during their World Cup qualifying match in Glasgow.
