Emmanuel Macron Inaugurated as French President

May 15, 2017

Emmanuel Macron was sworn in as the new president of France on Sunday at the Élysée Palace in Paris. Only 39-years-old, Macron is currently the youngest ever French president. The left-wing politician was greeted by former president, Francois Hollande, at the Élysée Palace. .The two sat down for a closed door meeting, during which it is believed Macron was given the codes to France’s nuclear arsenal.

Hollande had essentially launched Macron’s political career when he appointed him as an advisor in 2012, and as Minister of Economy and Finance in 2014 – a post he held until 2016, when he resigned from the government ahead of the 2017 election.

After his meeting with Hollande,, Macron and his staff applauded outgoing president Hollande as he was driven away from the Élysée Palace.

Macron has a keen focus on progressive political practices. He was a stark contrast to his right-wing conservative opponent, Marine Le Pen, whom he defeated by a country mile in the election on the 7th of May.

During his inauguration speech, Macron said that by electing him as president, the people of France have shown that they have chosen ‘hope’.He went on to promise that he will lead the country into a progressive future that will benefit from the European Union.

He also said that, in light of the UK’s exit from the European Union, France – under his leadership – will work hard to ‘rejuvenate’ and ‘relaunch’ the European Union.

Macron is expected to reveal the name of the new French Prime Minister sometime today.
