Elon Musk Supports YouTuber’s Green Initiative

November 05, 2019

What started out as a feel-good way for YouTuber MrBeast – real name Jimmy Donaldson – to celebrate achieving 20 million subscribers on his channel by planting 20 million trees has now become a force for environmental good.

The cause caught the eye of fellow YouTuber and former NASA engineer Mark Rober, and they partnered up to co-launch the “#TeamTrees” fundraiser to help plant trees.

The two social media stars decided that every donation made by interested parties will go to the Arbor Day Foundation, which pledged to plant a tree for every US dollar donated.

The goal is to plant trees across every continent across the world, according to Donaldson.

The biggest shock donation has come from Tesla founder Elon Musk, who contributed $1 million to plant trees the worldwide effort.

On 29 October, Musk showed interest in the project when he responded to a tweet thread.

After another user explained the initiative, Musk then tweeted: “Ok, sounds legit, will donate 1M trees [sic]”

Several other big names have contributed to the cause, including Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, YouTube golden boy PewDiePie and Donaldson himself.

Progress on the goal currently sits at 12 877 966 trees planted.
