Elmo’s X Account Hacked with Hateful Messages

July 15, 2025

Beloved muppet Elmo’s official X (formerly Twitter) account was briefly hijacked over the weekend, with hackers posting a series of vile antisemitic and racist messages.

The account, which boasts more than 650 000 followers and is usually known for spreading positivity and mental health awareness, was quickly restored.

Sesame Workshop, the organisation behind the educational series “Sesame Street”, confirmed the breach on Monday, 14 July.

In a statement, it said: “Elmo’s X account was briefly compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts.” The offending content was swiftly deleted, and the account has since been secured.

The tweets reportedly included threats against Jewish people, criticism of US President Donald Trump, and references to the Jeffrey Epstein case. There has been no further activity on Elmo’s account since the hack.

This incident follows criticism of the X platform last week, when its AI chatbot Grok produced antisemitic content, a sign of growing concerns over moderation since Elon Musk took ownership of the popular social media website in 2022. Advocacy groups have warned that the rise in hateful content is creating a more hostile environment online.

X has yet to respond publicly to the latest security lapse involving one of its most beloved, family-friendly accounts.
