Ekitike’s Season Ends Following Achilles Rupture

April 15, 2026

Liverpool’s pursuit of Champions League qualification has suffered a devastating blow after scans confirmed Hugo Ekitike ruptured his Achilles tendon.

The 23-year-old collapsed without contact 30 minutes into Tuesday’s defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

The injury concludes a prolific debut season for the £79 million signing, who has netted 17 goals. While family members initially hoped the damage was less severe, Liverpool’s medical team and French national coach Didier Deschamps have confirmed the striker will miss the remainder of the campaign and the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

“Hugo suffered a serious injury against PSG on Tuesday night,” said Deschamps. “Unfortunately, the severity of his injury will prevent him from finishing the season with Liverpool and from taking part in the World Cup.”

Arne Slot now faces a selection crisis, as Ekitiké’s absence leaves Alexander Isak—recently returned from a broken leg – as the club’s sole fit striker. With Mohamed Salah departing this summer and Ekitike potentially sidelined for nine months, the club’s recruitment strategy faces immediate pressure.

Despite the setback, Deschamps remains optimistic about the youngster’s future, stating, “Hugo will regain his top form, I’m convinced of it.”
