Uruguayan striker, Edinson Cavani has won the coveted Player of the Year award in the French League, as their season draws to a close.

The Paris Saint-Germain player has had a stellar season with club, having scored 35 goals in the league thus far. He has been a shining light for the French club since the departure of former star striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whom he replaced as centre-forward..

Cavani was up against Monaco midfielder, Bernardo Silva, and Lyon striker, Alexandre Lacazette, who came second and third, respectively.

Upon accepting his award, Cavani said that he appreciated this endorsement from his peers and that, even though his team as a whole did not do as well, he believes next season will be a good one for them.

“I would have preferred collective awards to a personal one but this season will teach us many positive things for the upcoming one,” he said.

Cavani is also very close to the French record for most goals scored in the league. The current top spot, of 50 goals, is held by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with Cavani trailing behind by just two goals, on 48.

Other awards went to Monaco manager, Leonardo Jardim, for Best Coach award, and Memphis Depay from Lyon, for Best Goal of the Season.
