Eddie Van Halen, 65, Passes Away
American rock legend and acclaimed guitarist, Edward Lodewij “Eddie” Van Halen, has passed away at the age of 65.
In a statement released via Twitter, his son Wolfgang confirmed that his father passed away on Tuesday morning, 6 October, after a long battle with cancer.
The 29-year-old musician penned an emotional tribute: “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”
Van Halen and his older brother, Alex, founded their eponymous rock band, Van Halen, in 1972. The group went on to sell 75 million albums worldwide, and released classics such as “Running with the Devil”, “Jump” and “Without You”.
Van Halen himself was considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and was known for his “finger-tapping” technique – playing the guitar with two hands.
He is survived by his son Wolfgang, as well as his wife of 11 years, Janie Liszewski.
