Ebola Outbreak: 24-Year-Old Woman Dies in DRC

August 27, 2019

A 24-year-old woman died on Friday, 16 August, after contracting the deadly Ebola virus in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as per reports from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

WHO mentioned in a post on Twitter that the woman’s 7-month-old son was also confirmed to be infected with the contagion, and is receiving treatment.

A 7-year-old child died last week Tuesday, 20 August, in the same area.

The outbreak has remained a major concern for the country’s authorities since it first started last summer.

However, scientists recently announced a breakthrough in two Ebola vaccines that have proven so effective that they are being offered to all those infected across the country.

Last month, the virus claimed the lives of two people from the city of Goma, a major transit hub for the region. Many fear that traffic through the city of 1 million people could result in the Ebola virus spreading to other countries.
