Dwight Yorke Not Impressed With Southgate’s Treatment of Rooney
Former Manchester United player, Dwight Yorke, has slammed England’s interim manager, Gareth Southgate’s treatment of Wayne Rooney.
Southgate recently caused quite a stir when he did not include Rooney in the starting lineup in England’s World Cup qualifying match against Slovenia last week.
Yorke believes it was a bad move on Southgate’s part, who he says only did that because of the media pressure.
“…You get people like Gareth Southgate taking him out of the team because of the pressure from the media and I think that’s wrong especially coming off the back of a positive result…[sic] Sometimes you have to show people a little faith and for Gareth Southgate to make that call, well I thought that was a little strange,” he said.
He continued saying that what he did was disrespectful and a disgrace:
“…To then put him in front of the media to face the music and say he isn’t going to play was disrespectful and a disgrace in my opinion.”
Rooney is England’s all-time top scoring player, having scored 53 goals in his national career.
