Dirk Kuyt Announces Retirement
Dutch international footballer, Dirk Kuyt, has announced his retirement from the game, a mere three days after securing the Eredivisie league title for his club, Feyenoord.
Kuyt, who first played for Feyenoord from 2003 to 2006 returned to the Dutch club in 2015 and was extremely instrumental in securing the Eredivisie title on Sunday.
Kuyt scored all three goals for Feyenoord on Sunday, when they beat Heracles 3-1. Feyenoord managed to finish their campaign in the top spot, one point ahead of Ajax.
In a statement released on Feyenoord’s website, Kuyt said that now felt like the right time for him to hang up his boots.
“Throughout my career I have always followed my heart when taking decisions and that goes for this one too…To me this feels like the right time to retire. I have had two fantastic years here since returning to Feyenoord, with this season’s title as the absolute pinnacle..I had the dream of winning trophies and becoming a champion with Feyenoord. All my dreams have come true,” he said.
Kuyt has had an incredible career and has been one of the most reliable Dutch international players since his debut for his country in 2004.
He went on to make 104 appearances for the Netherlands and score 24 goals.
He also had impressive stints at major European clubs, such as Utrecht, and EPL club, Liverpool.
