Diplomats Still In Debt
It seems that the Zimbabwean government’s debt woes are far from over. as it was recently revealed that the government is still failing to make payments and that rental arrears and other debts are amounting to over $40 million now at embassies around the world.
The situation has escalated so much that the country has not yet been able to pay its 2015 annual subscription to the AU – even though President Robert Mugabe being the organisation’s chair.
The parliamentary portfolio committee on foreign affairs recently heard that Zimbabwe is still not paying rent at most of its 45 embassies around the globe with more than $40 million needed to settle the debt.
David Hamadziripi, acting secretary for foreign affairs, said that the country is continuously struggle to make rental payments:
“…[sic] all rented premises are in arrears, with a number of missions in receipt of eviction notices…Our officials are regularly summoned by the ministries of foreign affairs in host countries to explain issues relating to default in payment of rent and other obligations,”
