Since joining Liverpool in 2020, Jota had scored 65 goals in 182 matches, lifting the English Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He also played a key role in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph in June this year.
Tributes have poured in from across the footballing world. Cristiano Ronaldo wrote on his social media accounts: “It doesn’t make sense… I know you’ll always be with [your family].”
Wolverhampton Wanderers, his former club, shared that they were “heartbroken,” while Lionel Messi simply said “May he rest in peace” via his Instagram account.
Jota’s funeral will be held in Gondomar, near Porto, tomorrow, Saturday 5 July, following a wake today. The football community continues to mourn a respected professional and devoted family man.
