DiCaprio’s Foundation Pledges $5m to Combat Amazon Blaze
Leonardo DiCaprio’s new initiative has helped donate $5 million towards fighting the ongoing fires that are currently ravaging the Amazon forests.
The 44-year-old Academy Award winner has backed a new environmental foundation – the Amazon Forest Fund – to aid efforts in Brazil by providing financial assistance to five local conservation organisations.
The “Titanic” actor posted to his Instagram account yesterday, 26 August, saying: “Yesterday, we launched the Amazon Forest Fund, the first initiative from the newly formed Earth Alliance. The fund was set up to help local partners and the indigenous communities on the front lines protecting the Amazon.”
Earth Alliance, the main body providing the assistance, was formed through a partnership with DiCaprio, Apple co-founder Laurene Powell Jobs and, co-founder and President of Vista Equity Partners Brian Sheth.
Their main objective is to “partner with other non-profit organisations, communities, government agencies and funders who are on diverse missions to help save the planet”.
Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research claims that wildfires in the country have increased by 84 per cent in comparison with the same period last year.
