Danny Welbeck Receives Warm Welcome at Chelsea

August 07, 2026

Joao Pedro has enthusiastically welcomed the surprise arrival of veteran striker Danny Welbeck to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea secured the 35-year-old forward on a two-year contract from Brighton & Hove Albion for an estimated £7 million, providing newly appointed manager Xabi Alonso with proven English Premier League experience following a 13-goal campaign.

The transfer reunites Welbeck with former Brighton teammates Pedro and Moises Caicedo for another stint together.

Pedro spoke warmly of Welbeck, describing him as “helpful” and a “good person” who would bring vital leadership and support to the squad. Caicedo spoke similarly of the experienced forward’s impact, noting how essential his mentality and guidance were during their time on the South Coast.

Welbeck, who featured alongside Pedro in the Blues’ pre-season friendly against Juventus on Wednesday, 5 August, expressed “immense pride” in joining the West London club, citing positive discussions with Alonso and a desire to make supporters proud.

His arrival comes amid a major summer overhaul under Alonso, as Chelsea aim to rebuild following a disappointing 10th-place finish. With strong dressing-room backing, Welbeck is expected to play a crucial role both as an experienced mentor and on-field contributor.
