Cyclone Idai Strikes Southern Africa, Hundreds Dead
Cyclone Idai continues to tear through several southern African countries, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake.
Travelling at winds of up to 177 km/h, Cyclone Idai is believed to be the worst since Cyclone Jokwe made landfall in Mozambique in 2008.
In Mozambique, the death toll has risen to at least between 150 and 215 people after the deadly cyclone struck the country’s central region last week, causing severe flooding, destruction of infrastructure, and power outages.
However, President Filipe Nyusi claims that the death toll could be as high as 1 000.
In Zimbabwe, 89 people have been confirmed dead while more than 200 remain missing, after the cyclone tore through its Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Masvingo provinces. Infrastructure including roads, bridges and buildings were destroyed or heavily damaged.
Malawi has seen its death toll rise to 122 after Cyclone Idai struck the country last week.
Humanitarian agencies, local and international governments, and corporations are currently lending their assistance to those affected by Cyclone Idai.
