Crystal Palace’s Europa League Fate Delayed
Crystal Palace will have to wait a while longer to hear the decision regarding their eligibility in the upcoming UEFA Europa League season.
Back in May, the Eagles defeated Manchester City 1-0 to win the FA Cup. This victory ensured their automatic qualification for the 2025/26 Europa League.
However, UEFA’s rules also dictate that two teams owned by the same entity are prohibited from participating in the same European competition.
At the time of writing, American businessman John Textor owns a significant 44% stake in Palace; additionally, he is the principal shareholder of French outfit, Lyon, who also qualified for the Europa League.
Originally scheduled for Monday, 30 June, the announcement concerning Palace’s future has been delayed. This postponement stems from two key developments: Lyon’s impending relegation to Ligue 2 due to financial difficulties, and Textor’s intention to sell his stake.
Furthermore, Lyon is currently appealing the relegation decision. However, they have agreed to forgo participation in UEFA competitions should their demotion be confirmed.
Once a verdict is reached, UEFA will subsequently finalise Crystal Palace’s eligibility for the Europa League.
