Croatia: Earthquake Strikes Capital City

March 23, 2020

At least 16 people have been injured, with one left in a critical condition, after an earthquake in Zagreb, Croatia.

The 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck north of the Croatian capital in the early hours of Sunday morning, 22 March.

Many buildings – including the Croatian Parliament Building, the Zagreb Cathedral, and the homes of residents – were extensively damaged.

Photos of belongings falling off shelves, broken bottles and glass, cracked rooftops and fallen chimneys were shared online by residents.

Other damage from the earthquake includes debris littering the streets, vehicles smashed by concrete slabs, and electricity outages.

A 15-year-old girl – who was in an apartment building when it collapsed – is said to be seriously injured. It is unknown at this time where the teenager is being hospitalised, although it has been reported that doctors are “fighting to save her life”.

The Croatian government has since urged citizens to remain calm and return to their homes as a protective measure against the coronavirus, which has infected approximately 200 people in the country.
