Court Heirs Dirty Laundry of Faux-Socialite

April 26, 2019

A woman who pretended to be a German heiress and scammed more than $200 000 from banks and friends, was found guilty of multiple offences by a Manhattan jury on Thursday, 25 April.

Anna Delvey – real name Sorokin – allegedly schemed her way into New York City’s high society by pretending to be a billionaire heiress from Germany.

The 28-year-old managed to scam money from banks by pretending to want to open a club and charming numerous people. The fraudster used the money she stole to live luxuriously in a Manhattan hotel and to travel by private plane between November 2016 and August 2017.

The charges include grand larceny in the first, second and third degree, along with theft of services, all for which Sorokin potentially faces up to 15 years of imprisonment. She is likely to be deported back to Germany as her visa has expired.

Sorokin, who hired a stylist for her trial, is set to have her story turned into a Netflix original series by “Grey’s Anatomy” creator and acclaimed writer, Shonda Rhimes.

She is expected to be sentenced on 9 May.
