Copa America: Red-Carded Gabriel Jesus Loses Cool

July 08, 2019

Manchester City striker, Gabriel Jesus, was sent off in the final of the Copa America between Brazil and Peru on Sunday, 7 July. The Brazilian forward was completely devastated, and eventually lost his cool towards a VAR monitor before breaking into tears.

Jesus was shown a red card immediately after receiving a second yellow card for a foul he committed against Carlos Zambrano. The 22-year-old tried to protest his innocence but was unsuccessful.

While storming off the pitch in tears, a frustrated Jesus kicked a water bottle, punched the dug-out and pushed the VAR monitor.

The forward felt disappointed by the VAR, as he believed it could have saved him and overturned the referee’s decision.

However, later that evening, Jesus apologised for his behaviour: “I want to apologise. I could have avoided it, and I also need to grow up a lot.”
