Controversial film to release in SA
The Interview – the controversial film that was cancelled in many mainstream theatres in the US after threats from North Korea – is set to release in South Africa next month.
The comedy film stars Seth Rogan and James Franco as a TV show producer and host who discover that a North Korean dictator is a fan of their show. Seeing this an opportunity to legitimise themselves as journalists, the duo lands an interview with the dictator in North Korea.
Things take an unexpected turn when the CIA recruits them to assassinate the dictator, which obviously complicates things.
The Interview was set to release in the US last Christmas, but was quickly pulled off the release schedule due to threats from alleged Sony hackers, Guardians of Peace, who threatened to attack any cinema showing the film.
After pressure from the US government and the public, Sony eventually released the film in select theatres, streaming services, and other online outlets, with a home video release planned.
The Interview is set to release theatrically in South Africa on February 6, 2015.
